POHA MODAK / AVAL MODAK

Poha Modak / Aval Modak is an easy recipe and healthy recipe for Ganesh Chaturthi.  My kids like aval and am trying to add aval in their diet atleast weekly once.  Before I try this I was in doubt whether will it be good!  But it turns out very delicious and yummy.  Last week when I shared the link of Aval Kesari for my friend, I had a thought to prepare this kozhukattai for this chaturthi.  As I mentioned in earlier, it was awesome :-) Last year I made modak with regular pooran, and today am here for this yummy and delicious Poha Modak :-)

INGREDIENTS:

Rice flour            - 1 cup
Water                  - 1 1/4 cup
Sesame oil          -1 tsp
Salt                     - if needed or a pinch

For stuffing:

Poha / Aval             - 1/2 cup
Jaggery                    - 1/2 cup
Grated coconut        - 2 to 3 tsp
Nuts                         - 2 tsp (Includes Cashews, Badham & pista)
Cardamom powder  - a pinch

HOW TO MAKE:

First, lets make the stuffing ready.  Powder the jaggery and in a deep kadai / pan heat it by adding 1/4 cup of water.  Let the jaggery get dissolved and boil well.

Meanwhile in a mixie / blender make a coarse powder of aval.  Also make a coarse powder of the nuts.

Once the jaggery dissolved add powdered poha, grated coconut and nuts mixture.

Allow to cool down and make a small balls out of it.

Heat water in a deep pan / kadai.  Add a pinch of salt and sesame oil.  When the water boil, add rice flour little by little.  Use a spatula and mix well and make a smooth dough out of it.

Grease modak mould and take a small amount of rice dough.  Press little flour inside the mould as shown in the picture.

Keep one ball inside the mould and cover the bottom with little dough.  slowly remove it from the mould and place it on the idly vessel.  Steam / cook for 10 mins.

TIPS:

Do not add more water for making the dough.  The dough supposed to be like chappathi dough.

Do not add more salt and it will result crack on the kozhukaatai.

Cover the dough with clean wet cloth to avoid the dough getting harder soon.
