KOTHAVARANGAI VATHAL / SUN DRIED CLUSTER BEANS / CLUSTER BEANS FRYUMS

As I mentioned in my post earlier its always a feel good factor if mom is around and I could be able to learn more recipes besides losing myself in mom's food :-) Since she is here with us, I wish to blog my mom's recipes.  In that way, here am with Kothavarangai vathal recipe.  She learnt this recipe from her mother in law that is my Appayi (Grandma).  I still remember that my Appayi starts making vathal / vadam during tamil month Masi.  She and her friend Sengammalam (name) Ammachi (Grandma) used to do these fryums together.  Last wekk when we went to Indian store mom found this cluster beans and immediately said that, "My son-in-law likes kothavarangai vathal so will make it".  Why not!!! for me it is a great chance to learn as well to blog :-) . I never tried making this vathal, but once she made it, I felt like why I did not blog this so fat?!  Pretty cool recipe with just a two steps.  Try this different fryums and it is super good combo with rasam / curd rice :-)

INGREDIENTS:

Kothavarangai / Cluster beans - 1 kg
Salt 1/2 tsp

HOW TO MAKE:

Wash the cluster beans thoroughly.  Heat 10 cups of water in a deep vessel along with salt.  (I used idly vessel) . When the water starts boiling add washed cluster beans.  Boil the beans for 5 to 6 minutes, drain the water and place them in a colander.  Let the water fully drained.

After the moisture completely gone, spread the beans on a plate or a plastic sheet under the sun.  Dry it for 4 to 5 days.  If it is very hot it should be dried in 3 to 4 days.  Dry it till it get crispy.  Store it in a airtight container to keep the freshness.  Whenever want, deep fry the vathal and enjoy!!!

TIPS:

If the beans are too long you can cut into half not very small pieces.

Can be tired the same method to make ladies finger vathal, pavakkai vathal, mango vathal and many!

1/4 tsp of turmeric powder along with salt.
