Barnyard Millet Upma is very easy recipe and that too in Instant Pot its super easy! Hmm... I could say that now I got used to with Instant Pot and am falling in love with this magical cooker everyday!  It is my second recipe in my blog by using Instant Pot.  Barnyard Millet is called Kuthiraivali in Tamil / Odalu in Telugu / Oodalu in Kannada and Jhangora in Hindi. Very easy to cook and most importantly time saving!  This Barnyard Millet Upma tastes very similar to Arisi Upma,  You can make it with many vegetables or as simple as with just onions.  Very healthy coz,  of its nutritional values such as, very good for diabetics and improve metabolism of our body.  Rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron and fiber.  Since it makes you to feel full for long time, it helps us to avoid junking in between the meals 😎

BARNYARD MILLET UPMA STEP BY STEP

INGREDIENTS:

Barnyard Millet   - 1 Cup
Big Onion            - 1 finely chopped
Water                   - 2 1/2 Cups
Pepper powder    - 1 tsp
Salt                      - as needed

TO TEMPER:

Oil                        - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds      - 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds        - 1 tsp
Urad dal               - 1 tsp
Red chillies          - 3 to 4
Curry leaves         - few


HOW TO MAKE:

Wash and soak barnyard millet for 30 minutes.  Turn IP on and turn on the saute mode. Heat oil in the pot and when it is hot enough splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds and urad dal. 


Break red chillies and add them along with curry leaves and chopped onions.  Add salt and let the onion translucent. Turn off the saute mode.  Add soaked barnyard millet along with 2 1/2 cups of water. Mix them well and check salt and add if needed.


Turn on pressure cook mode and keep 7 minutes.  After 7 minutes Instant Pot will go to low pressure mode.  When the steam released turn off the instant pot and open the lid. Mix gently and serve hot with any chutney or sambar and this is more tasty even without any side dish 😋



TIPS:

Tomatoes and other veggies can be added.  

Do not add more than 2 1/2 cups of water as it may result mushy upma. 

Grated coconut can be added as well.
