STEP BY STEP MAKING BANANA STEM SAMBAR

INGREDIENTS:

Banana stem - 250 gms 
Toor dal - 1 cup 
Water - as required 
Small onion - 10 
Green chili - 8 to 10 
Tomato - 2 
Sambar powder - 1 tbsp / as required 
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp 
Salt - as required 
Curd - 1 tbsp 

TO TEMPER:
Oil - 2 tbsp 
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp 
Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp 
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp  
Curry leaves - few

HOW TO MAKE:

Mix a tbsp of curd in a bowl of water and keep aside. Take a banana stem and peel the thick layers until soft stem. Cook toor dal along with 3 cups of water, mash well and keep aside.

 

Cut banana stem into slices. Remove fibers when you slice them and put the slices in the curd mixed water. This helps avoid changes its color. 
 

 
Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, add chopped small onions, green chilies, hing, tomatoes and needed salt. 

 

Mash cooked toor dal and keep aside. Cook onion and tomatoes are until soft. Add chopped banana stem. Mix well, cover and cook until soft.


Once the banana stem cooked add sambar powder and turmeric powder. Mix well and cook for 2 minutes. 


Add mashed toor dal and combine well. Add water for needed consistency. Mix well and bring it to boil. Cook for 5 to 10 minutes in a medium flame. 


Serve hot with rice along with any curry of your choice. 

 

TIPS:

This vazhaithandu sambar does not need tamarind so try not adding tamarind. The flavor of banana stem and the green chili enhance the sambar and trust me you will love it. 

Same way make this sambar by adding white pumpkin and ladies finger.
