DRUMSTICK LEAVES KICHADI / MURUNGAI KEERAI KICHADI



Kichadi is a regular dish in most Indian households. Traditional kichadi recipes are based on mixed vegetables. This recipe I am posting is a different variant based on drumstick leaves (murungai keerai) The flavour of the murungai keerai will make you eat a lot and it is very healthy too. As parents, we all know how challenging it is to make our kids to eat keerai without too much fuss. But this recipe will make them to have more- trust me! Enjoy and give me your feedback :-)

INGREDIENTS:

Drumstick leaves /
Murungai keerai      - 2 cups
Rice                         - 1 cup
Moongdhal              - 1/2 cup
Onion                      - 1 finely chopped
Tomato                    - 1 finely chopped
Ginger garlic paste  - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder    - 1/4 tsp
Salt                          - as needed

To temper:

Ghee                       - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds           - 1/2 tsp
Red chillies             - 2
Coriander leaves     - 2 tsp finely chopped
Asafoetida              - a pinch

HOW TO MAKE:

Pluck the keerai from the stem and wash it well.  Keep aside.  Heat ghee in a kadai add cumin seeds, red chillies and asafoetida.  Add chopped onions and ginger garlic paste.  Add chopped tomatoes.
Blend well.


Add drumstick leaves and blend with the masala.  Wash rice and moongdhal together.  In a pressure cooker add all the mixed ingredients and rice.  Mix well and add four cups of water and needed salt. Allow 4 to 5 whistles.



Wait until the steam get released.  Mix well.


Drumstick leaves kichadi is ready to serve.

Serve with raitha or Gujarathi Kadi :-)
