ARISI PARUPPU SADAM / DHAL RICE / PARUPPU SADAM - KONGU / COIMBATORE STYLE



Arisi Paruppu Sadam is one of my family favourite one pot meals.  My family just loves it!  This paruppu sadam is very popular is coimbatore.  One of my friend Ramya often makes this and no wonder why? Coz, she is from Pollachi.  It is an authentic Kongunadu recipe.  It's very simple but it tastes delicious.  If you all like one pot meal then this arisi paruppu sadam is the best and you all will love it.

INGREDIENTS:

Rice / Arisi         - 1 cup
Toor dhal            - 1/4 cup
Small onions       - 8 to 10 cut into circle
Garlic                  - 2 to 3 cloves finely chopped
Tomato                 - 1 finely chopped
Sambar powder    - 2 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Salt                      - as needed

To temper:

Oil                        - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds      - 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds         - 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds   - 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida            - a pinch
Red chillies          - 2 to 3
Curry leaves         - few

HOW TO MAKE:

Wash rice and dal together and soak it for 15 to 20 mins.  Heat oil in a pressure cooker splutter mustard seeds add cumin seeds.  Add chopped onions, garlic and red chillies.  Saute them well and let the onion turn into transparent.  Add curry leaves and asafoetida.


Add chopped tomato, sambar and turmeric powder.  Mix well and when tomato get tender and leaves the oil around add soaked rice and dhal.  


Mix well and add 3 cups of water.  Add fresh chopped coriander leaves on the top.   Cover it and allow 3 to 4 whistles.  




TIPS:

Add a tsp of ghee or sesame oil while serving to enhances the taste.  

Cinnamon stick and bay leaf can be added in tempering.  I did avoid the garam masala flavour hence I did not add.  Garam masala lovers can add masalas.

Green chilli can be added instead red chillies.  

Small onion can be replaced with big onions too, chop finely and add it.
