KOLLU SUNDAL / HORSE GRAM SUNDAL




Kollu / Horse gram is very good source of protein, calcium and iron.  In Tamil it is Kollu, in Telugu "Ulavalu" and in Hindi "Kulthi".  Three months back I have posted Kollu Podi and we just loved it.  As I mentioned in that post one of my friend Sangeetha bought a big packet of kollu and I planned to make kollu recipes one  by one.  This kollu is known to benefit for diabetes and aids in weight loss.  My mom always tells as that it is used in treating irregular periods too.  When I made this sundal I made kollu rasam too.  Two in one recipe :-)  and the rasam recipe is on its way.  Try to include kollu in your regular diet as it has high protein and less cholesterol.  It is a very good evening snack and healthy snack for packing to school as well.  

INGREDIENTS:

Kollu / Horse gram  - 1 cup
Onion                       - finely chopped

To temper:   

Oil                            - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds          - 1/4 tsp
Urad dhal                 - 1 tsp
Onion                       - 1 finely chopped
Red chillies              - 2 break into pieces
Asafoetida                - a pinch
Curry leaves             - few

HOW TO MAKE:

Soak kollu overnight or 6 to 7 hours.  Wash well then pressure cook with two cups of water by adding needed salt. Allow 4 to 5 whistles.  Do not allow more than 5 whistles which will result mushy kollu. Once the steam released drain the water and keep aside.  Keep the water and you can use that for making rasam.  


Heat oil in a kadai splutter mustard seeds add urad dhal.  Add curry leaves and finely chopped onion. Add hing and red chilies.  Fry onions until it turn into transparent.  Add cooked Kollu / Horse gram and blend well without breaking it.  Cook for 5 mins in low flame.  



TIPS:

Do not allow more than 5 whistles.  That will result mushy kollu.

Not to worry if it get mushy, add grated coconut and jaggery to make sweet kollu urundai.   Will post the recipe soon.

You can add green chillies instead red chillies.
