NEERAGARAM / PAZHAYATHU / PAZHAYA SADHAM

Pazhayathu / Neeragaram / Pazhaya sadham most of us forgotten about this coz of our fast paced life. I was thinking to post this long time back but it didn't strike to do it.  This is my one of the favourite in my childhood and even now.  I usually drink weekly twice just coz,  our rice consumption got reduced during the week days.  I still remember that my Appa (Dad) used to have this everyday in empty stomach and my Appayi (Dad's mom) too.  This is very rich in vitamin b12. It is an amazing body coolant and during summer this is the best drink to beat the heat. My appayi cooks Murngakkerai / Drumstick leaves poriyal and that was my best combo for this pazhaya sadham and pickle ;-)

Having pazhaya sadham will keep our hungry away for atleast 5 to 6 hours. And this is the common food most of the villagers have daily to keep them energised throughout the day.  This will keep them cool as they need to work the whole sunny day.  Do try this energising drink and keep your body cool for this summer :-)

INGREDIENTS:

Left over rice       - 1/2 cup (if you have lot use it)
Water                   - 2 cups
Butter milk           - 1/2 cup
Asafoetida / Hing - a pinch
Onion                  - as needed
Green chilli         - as needed (optional)
Salt                      - as needed

HOW TO MAKE:

Soak the leftover rice overnight with water.  Next day, drain the water and take little rice and mash with hands.  Add little more water to bring it to running watery consistency.

Add butter milk and needed salt with a pinch of asafoetida.  Mix well and serve with pickle or onions. If you have mud pots pour into it and allow to rest for a while.

TIPS:

Adding butter milk is just to enhance the taste and can be drunk without butter milk which is actually a neeragaram.

Mud pot is a natural coolant and it gives a natural cooling effect.

Curry leaves, coriander leaves, chopped green chillies can be added for extra flavour.
