VAZHAIPOO KICHADI / BANANA FLOWER KICHADI

As I mentioned in my earlier posts, if I see Vazaipoo / Banana flower in the shop, I will just grab it. Last week I saw a big flower in Keemat Groceries and I bought one and wanted to make something different which I have not posted yet.  I have blogged Vazhaipoo Usili, Vazhaipoo Poriyal , Vazhaipoo Vadai   & Vazhaipoo Sambar .  When I thinking to make something different, kichadi came to my mind, which is one of my favourite food. Actually, that is a one pot meal which we can make it fatafat...but for this vazhaipoo kichadi, it took time coz, the cleaning is very big process.  So I cleaned and made it ready a previous day and it became so quick on the next day to make this delicious kichadi :-)

INGREDIENTS:

Banana flower                  - 2 cups
Rice                                  - 1 cup
Moongdhal                       - 1/2 cup
Onion                               - 1 finely chopped
Tomato                             - 2 finely chopped
Turmeric powder             - 1/2 tsp
Ginger garlic paste          - 1 tsp
Salt                                  - to taste

To temper:

Ghee                                - 2 tsp
Cumin seeds                    - 1 tsp
Red chillies                      - 3 break into pieces
Asafoetida / Hing            - a pinch

HOW TO MAKE:

Clean vazhaipoo and chop finely.  Click here to learn HOW TO CLEAN VAZHAIPOO / BANANA FLOWER. Wash well and keep it in a bowl of water to avoid the flower to turn in black.  Heat ghee in a pressure cooker add cumin seeds and chopped onion and asafoetida. Add red chillies and ginger garlic paste. Blend them well till the nice aroma comes.

Add chopped tomatoes and mix well.  Add turmeric powder and chopped vazhaipoo / banana flower, along with needed salt.  Mix well and stir for two to three minutes.

Wash rice and moongdhal and add it in the vazhaipoo mixture.  Mix well and add 4 cups of water.

Cover the lid and allow 4 to 5 whistles.  Remove the lid once the steam released.  Serve with any raitha and this kichadi can be eaten without any side dish :-)

TIPS:

Allowing 4 to 5 whistles is the vazhaipoo to get cook well.   Vazhaipoo takes more time to cook.

I did not add any other vegetables, and you can add potato. I thought except potato nothing will go well along with vazhaipoo.
