CHOW CHOW SAMBAR | CHAYOTE SAMBAR | BANGALORE BRINJAL SAMBAR | WITH MASOOR DAL & CHANNA DAL

A simple and delicious sambar with two different dals.  Usually, we make sambar with toor dal and for a change I have used Masoor and Channa dal for making this Chow Chow sambar.  I could say it is one of the best protein rich sambar 😀 There is no difference other than adding this two dals. It was very yummy with Idly & dosa as well!

INGREDIENTS:

Chow Chow          - 1 cut into pieces
Masoor dal            - 1/2 cup
Channa dal            - 1/4 cup
Onion                    - 1 chop finely
Tomato                  - 1 chop finely
Sambar powder     - 2 tsp or as needed
Turmeric powder  - 1/4 tsp
Salt                       - to taste

TO TEMPER:

Oil                       - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds     - 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida          -1/4 tsp
Curry leaves       - few

HOW TO MAKE:

Wash dals togethere and pressure cook by adding 3 cups of water along with turmeric powder.  Soak tamarind for 30 mins and extract juice and keep aside.

Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds add fenugreek seeds, red chilli, asafoetida and curry leaves.  Saute them for a second then add chopped onions.  Add little salt it helps onion to transparent quicker.  Add chopped tomato saute them well and wait them to get tender.

Add chow chow and mix them well.  Add a cup of tamarind juice and allow to boil.

Add sambar powder and mix well.  Add cooked dal and cook for 5 more mins.  Check salt and add if needed.  Serve hot with rice, idli or dosa.

TIPS:

Moong dal can be added too!  Try adding different types of lentils to get more protein.

It is our usual version of sambar and just added two types of dal in it!

Adding coconut will give extra flavours, and for coconut lovers, grind grated coconut with sambar powder and add the paste after adding the cooked dal.

Mixed vegetables can be added too.
