We usually make Sambar by using Toor Dal and here is the different version by using Chana Dal. This Sambar was so yummy and I have made with Ash Gourd / Poosanikkai but other vegetables can be used. This Sambar does not have tamarind instead I have added tomatoes. But lemon juice can be added 😍

INGREDIENTS:
Chana Dal - 1 Cup
Ash Gourd - 3 Cups chopped
Sambar powder - 2 tbsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Tomato - 3
Green Chili - 5 - 6
Water - as required
Salt - to taste
Coriander leaves - for garnishing
TO TEMPER:
Oil - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves - few
HOW TO MAKE:
Pressure cook chana dal with 3 cups of water and allow 4 to 5 whistles. Whistles may vary depends on the pressure cooker. Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds add cumin seeds, chopped tomatoes, green chili and asafoetida. Mix well.
Cook until tomatoes are tendered. Add chopped ash gourd, sambar powder, turmeric powder and needed salt.
Combine well and add 3 to 4 cups of water or as required. Mix well and cook until ash gourd is soft.
Once the veggie is cooked add cooked chana dal along with needed water for consistency.
Mix well and bring to boil. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes and garnish with coriander leaves. Turn off the stove.
Chana Dal Sambar is ready to serve 😋
TIPS:
This is no onion no garlic and no tamarind sambar so you can make this version for your vrat days / pooja days.
If you want to get little more tanginess squeeze some lemon juice.
Do try add other vegetables.
