SURAIKKAI THOKKU / BOTTLE GOURD CURRY

Here I am bringing you a spicy thokku made with Suraikkai / Bottle gourd.  Normally I won't cook more spicy coz of my kids....but I just love spicy.  After a long time I wish to have more spicy and that's what made me to prepare this spicy thokku and of-course kids and my hubby just loved it by adding gingelly oil.

INGREDIENTS:

Bottle gourd / Suraikkai - 1
Onion                             - 1 finely chopped
Tomato                           - 3 finely chopped
Red chilli powder           - 1 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder          - 2 tsp
Turmeric powder           - 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida                      - a pinch
Salt                                 - as needed

To temper:

Oil                                  - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds                - 1/4 tsp
Urad dhal                       - 1 tsp
Curry leaves                   - few

HOW TO MAKE:

Wash suraikkai, peel the skin and cut into small pieces. If it has seeds then remove the seeds.  Mine is baby one so I didn't remove it.

Heat oil in a kadai splutter mustard seeds, add urad dhal and fry until the urad dhal turn into golden brown.  Do not burnt.  Add curry leaves.  Add chopped onions and asafoetida.  Fry the onions until it transparent.

Add chopped tomatos, red chilli, coriander and turmeric powder.  Blend well then add suraikkai pieces.  Mix well and add needed salt.  Add 1/2 cup of water.

Mix well and let the suraikkai get cooked.  Mix well and it will form a nice gravy.  Turn off the stove.

Serve with rice and tiffin items like idly and dosa.  It is good for roti too.

TIPS:

Do not add more water.  Suraikkai will leave more water when it get cooked. It is a thooku so no need to add more water.
