TOMATO SAMBAR / THAKKALI SAMBAR - WITH MOONGDHAL



A simple easy and quick sambar recipe with tomato by using moongdhal instead toor dhal.  Awesome taste and it goes well with pongal, idly and dosa too.  Try this easy peasy sambar and let me know the feedback :-)

INGREDIENTS:

Moongdhal       - 1 cup
Onion               - 1 thinly sliced
Ripe tomatoes  - 3 to 4 cut into pieces
Tamarind         - small piece which can make 1/4 cup juice
Sambar powder - 1 tsp
Green chillies    - 2
Salt                    - as needed

To temper:

Oil                     - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds   - 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida          - a pinch
Curry leaves       - few

HOW TO MAKE:

Pressures cook moongdhal with two cups of water and mash well.  Keep aside.  Heat oil in a kadai splutter mustard seeds, add fenugreek seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves.  Add onions and green chillies.  Fry until the onion turn into transparent.  Add tomato pieces.  Saute them well.



Add moonghdal mixture and add a cup of water .  Mix well add needed salt and sambar powder.  Blend well to avoid lumps and allow to boil.  Once it boiled add tamarind extract and cook for 5 more mins or until boil well.


Turn off the stove and add a tsp of gingelly oil for taste.
Serve hot with rice and pappad :-)
