KOLLU MASIYAL / HORSE GRAM GRAVY / ULAVALU CURRY / KULTHI CURRY

Kollu / Horse gram is very good source of protein, calcium and iron.  In Tamil it is Kollu, in Telugu "Ulavalu" and in hindi "Kulthi".  Have already mentioned kollu's health benefits in my previous posts!  It is very good for weight loss, there is a tamil proverb "Elachavanuku ellu kozhuthavanuku kollu"  :-) (Means, sesame seeds is for the person who want to gain weight and kollu / horse gram is for the person one who loose weight).  Monthly twice am making kollu food and trying to give some different types so the kids will not get bored :-) This is my sixth kollu / horse gram recipe and I have posted Kollu SundalKollu KuzhambuKollu RasamKollu Podi / Kollu Powder & Kollu Ennai Kathirikkai Kuzhambu.

INGREDIENTS:

Kollu                   - 1 cup
Onion                  - 1 finely chopped
Tomato                - 2 finely chopped
Garlic                  - 2 to 3 cloves
Red chilli powder- 1 tsp
Coriander powder- 1 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Lemon juice         - 2 tsp
Salt                      - as needed

TO TEMPER:

Oil                        - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds      - 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds        - 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds  - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves        - few
Asafoetida/Hing  - Hing

HOW TO MAKE:

Soak kollu / horse gram overnight or 5 to 6 hours.  Wash well and pressure cook by adding 3 cups of water.  Add salt.  Allow 4 to 5 whistles.  Let the steam get released.  Meanwhile heat oil in a pan / kadai splutter mustard seeds add fenugreek and cumin seeds.  Add chopped onion, garlic and chopped tomato along with curry leaves and asafoetida / hing.  Blend well and cook till the onion turns transparent and the tomatoes gets tendered.  Add red chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder. Add little salt (Added salt in kollu so make sure adding very little salt ) and mix well and in a minute or two it leaves the oil around.

By that time, keep 2 to 3 tsp of cooked kollu aside and add the rest into the masala.  Add little water and allow to boil.  Meanwhile take the cooked kollu which we kept aside and make a fine paste by adding little water.

When it boil add the kollu paste.  Mix well and cook for 5 more minutes in a medium flame.  Turn off the stove and add 2 tsp of lemon.

TIPS:

Adding lemon juice is absolutely your choice.  I like little tangy taste hence added.

Instead grinding the kollu mathu (whisk) or potato masher can be used to mash kollu.

Grinding kollu results the curry little thicker.  If you want watery consistency this step can be avoided.
