MULLANGI SAMBAR / RADISH SAMBAR - WITH LEMON

I just love my Amma's mullangi sambar!!! I did little variant that I added lemon instead tamarind.  It was delicious.  We could not make any difference in taste and just love it!  We can follow the same method for adding other vegetables like, potato, carrot, ladies finger, brinjal and drumstick and so on! Since lemon is good for health, I started using lemon instead tamarind.  Adding lemon idea I learnt from my friend Sowmya.

INGREDIENTS:

Radish                   - 1 cup cut into slices
Toor dal                - 1/2 cup
Onion                   - 1 finely chopped
Tomato                 - 1 finely chopped
Red chilli powder- 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder- 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Lemon juice         - 2 tsp
Salt                      - as needed

TO TEMPER:

Oil                         - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds       - 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds   - 1 tsp
Asafoetida / Hing - a pinch

HOW TO MAKE:

Pressure cook toor dal along with turmeric powder with 1 1/2 cups water.  Allow 3 to 4 whistles. Mash well and keep aside.  Heat oil in a deep vessel / pan splutter mustard seeds add fenugreek seeds and asafoetida.  Add chopped onion and tomato.  Fry the onion until it transparent and add radish. Blend well and cook until the raw smell goes.  You need not cook radish well, if you do not like the raw smell cook fully else saute for 5 to 6 mintues.

Add cooked dal and needed salt.  Allow to boil then turn off the stove.  Add lemon juice and mix well.  Garnish with curry leaves.

Serve with hot rice.

TIPS:

Sambar powder can be added instead red chilli and coriander powder.

Arachuvitta sambar also can be made by adding lemon.

Add different type of vegetables like potato, carrot, brinjal, avaraikkai and so on!
