Tomato Rice | Easy & Simple Tomato Rice | Thakkali Sadam | தக்காளி சாதம்


This tomato rice recipe has been with me since childhood when my mom used to make it. She makes it without any masalas, and she still uses the same method😍 This is so simple to make as well as sooo delicious. I have tried to blog this recipe for a while now, but I never got the chance. I made it a little spicy, but you can adjust the spice level as needed. It’s very quick so it takes less time😋

STEP BY STEP TOMATO RICE:

INGREDIENTS:

Cooked Rice              - 2 Cups
Onion                         - 1 
Tomato                      - 3
Ginger Garlic paste   - 1 tbsp
Green Chillies           - 7 - 8
Red chilli powder     - 1/2 tbsp
Turmeric powder      - 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida                - 1/4 tsp
Salt                           - to taste

TO TEMPER:

Oil                            - 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds          - 1/4 tbsp
Urad dal                   - 1 tbsp

HOW TO MAKE:


Heat oil in a kadai splutter mustard seeds, add urad dal.  Saute till urad dal golden brown.  Add chopped onion along with salt, ginger garlic paste and asafoetida.  


Saute till onion translucent.  Add slitted green chillies. 


Saute for a minute, add chopped tomatoes, red chilli powder and turmeric powder. 


Mix well and cook till tomatoes are soft.  Slowly it forms a thick gravy. 


Turn off the stove and add cooked rice.  Mix gently.  Tomato Rice is ready 😋


TIPS:

I have made little spicy by adding more green chillies and adjust spice level as needed.

Garlic can be added too.

I used regular sona masoori rice, basmati rice can be used instead regular rice. 

Cook rice and allow to cool down completely then mix it in the gravy.  Mixing hot rice will result mushy tomato rice.
